Arlington, Texas has more to offer other than the infamous home of Jerry’s World.
A few years ago Guy Feiri featured Jamaica Gates on his show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” and they instantly became popular. It is a small restaurant but you get the feel of Jamaica when you walk in, especially with all the Caribbean flags, Reggae music and posters of Bob Marley. If you go on the right night they have a live band and open mic for those brave enought to sing in front of people.
Our waitress greeted us and off the bat and told us they were out of the oxtail. We were perfectly fine with that because we were not planning on eating it anyway.
We decided to start with a sampler of appetizers which was a mix of plantains, sticky citrus wings and jerk shrimp. Oddly enough, when our waitress came back they were out of the sticky citrus wings….. soooo we ordered the jerk chicken wings in place of it.
Im thinking they were secretly being robbed of some of their food because we were informed they were out of jerk shrimp as well. Keep in mind it was a Sunday at 1 o’ clock in the afternoon, so just imagine our confusion when we heard this.
Our waitress suggested that we get the Jamaican cocktail beef patties, hesistantly we went along with it.
The appetizer finally arrived, and we were definetly in for a treat, because everything was delicious. India really loved the beef patties, she said she was going to order a dozen of them and eat them on her birthday. They were like little pastries filled with perfectly seasoned beef and veggies. They were little crispy on the outside and so good. The jerk chicken wings were the hit of course. Actually, they were probably one of the best chicken wings I have eaten, and trust me, I eat alot of chicken wings. I used to work at a chicken restaurant so I know chicken. I like to call it my version of Vitamin C. 😉 The plantains were good and ripe and complimented the savory items very well.
For our entrees I ordered the Curry Chicken which came with rice and mixed veggies. The Curry chicken was full of flavor and tasted very fresh. The veggies were seasoned deliciously, I just could not eat it all. I took the rest home to be eaten for a later snack.
India had the Jerk chicken entree with rice and peas. She on the other hand ate all of her food and left nothing for the dogs. I could have done my make up in that plate because she cleaned it. The flavors just went realy well together and had the right amount of spice.
Jamaica Gates was really good and we will be making another trip there in the near future. We definitely reccomend bringing your appetite because they make sure that you leave full and have plenty to take in a to go box. The atmosphere was fun…well aside from them running out of everything it was a great experience.
